3.0 Failure Event
On October 9, 1963, A landslide and flood occurred at the Vajont reservoir in Northeast Italy. A major landslide from the slope of Monte Toc Mountain, Figure 2(middle), pushed the water in the reservoir over-top and around the Vajont Dam. Approximately 2.6*10^8 cubic meters slid down from the mountain slope and into the reservoir. The sliding mass displaced nearly 30 million cubic meters of water into the Paive River Valley, Figure 2(bottom). Overwhelmed by the flooding waters, more than 2000 people perished in villages along the Piave River Valley. The flooding of the Paive Valley turned the land into a flat plain of mud with an impact crater 60 mters deep and 80 meters wide. However, The dam itself was largely undamaged. The top meter of the damn was heavily eroded but the main structure remained intact.
